What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term which refers to a large group of lung diseases characterized by obstruction of air flow that interferes with normal breathing. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most important conditions that compose COPD and they frequently coexist.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 65 million people have moderate to severe COPD worldwide. While there is no cure for COPD, symptoms can typically be controlled.

FAQ

How long is the study?

If you are eligible and consent to participating, you will have up to 12 visits over 72 weeks (1 year of investigational treatment, 5 months of follow-up).  Study visits at the site will last approximately 3-6 hours.

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this study is to determine if the investigational medication can reduce the worsening of COPD symptoms, and improve patients' breathing and the way they feel, and to determine whether the need for rescue or reliever medications is reduced.

What is a clinical research study?

Clinical research studies are used to show if/how a investigational drug works and to find out if it is safe. They can also be referred to as clinical research trials.  Qualified healthcare professionals run clinical studies.  The doctors and other healthcare providers are responsible for the study-related care of the people that participate (or enroll) in these studies. Clinical research studies are a mandatory part of the process that leads to health authority review and approval which is required before a drug can be marketed.

Independent committees (called Institutional Review Boards or IRBs) are made up of medical and nonmedical people who also watch over clinical research studies to make sure that the people who enroll are properly and adequately informed and consent to study participation.
